The Refugee Tales anthologies set out to communicate the experiences of those who, having sought asylum in the UK, find themselves indefinitely detained. Over the past three years the Refugee Tales project has organised walks in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers and immigration detainees, highlighting the fact that the UK is the only country in Europe that detains indefinitely under immigration rules. Working directly in collaboration with those who have experienced the UK asylum system, and taking Chaucer’s great poem of journeying as a model, established writers have told a series of tales en route. Through that sharing of other people’s tales the project has gathered and communicated experiences of migration, seeking to show, in particular, what indefinite detention means and, in the process, calling for the practice to end. At this final event of the 2018 walk, Vanessa Redgrave, star of stage and screen, will read ‘The Student’s Tale’ and novelist Neel Mukherjee will read ‘The Soldier’s Tale’.
